Making a mountain

2002-10-29 - 8:04 p.m.

I started my pediatrics rotation yesterday. My preceptor is Marlis. I like Marlis. She's a bit gruff, but she's cool. Today I went to rounds for the first time. It was fun! Other than the fact that I was a bit late so there were no more chairs so I had to stand up the whole time. So there is the attending who is in charge, he's Dr. Buhar. Then there's the senior resident, Side, and the junior resident, Craig. Under them are the four interns (first year residents), Jacob, Dave, Jen, and...dang, can't remember her name. Each of the interns has two students. I couldn't even begin to name them. Now there's me, Ms. Drug Specialist, and my student, Aileen. And that's us: Gen Peds. Aileen has been doing this for several weeks already, and I've been told by other pharmacists that she's not exactly the brightest bulb in the room. But she's very nice and she gave me a very thorough tour. I'm following all the peds patients, though, not just the general ones. So that gives me about 35 patients to follow. Ok, ok, I don't do all the peds. I haven't picked up the PICU yet or any of the babies. But just to give you a hint of how much I need to improve, today I got 3 patients done. Heh, great. I will get better though, have no fear.

Speaking of fear, I had a long discussion with myself and I've come to the conclusion that I'm an idiot. Ha ha, well, no, I guess we are not quite agreed on that. A common thread of conversation in my head is, "I'm such an idiot," "No you're not!" But anyway, the point of this is the whole phone issue. I mean, seriously, if talking to me on the phone is enough to scare someone away, then that someone is definitely not the right someone anyway. Does that make any sense? Well it does to me.
